Axels

Select an axle to suit your application.

There are basically two bearing types used in small trailers up to approximately three tonne.

  • LM (or Holden Bearings) 750 kg on a 39 Round Axle
  • LM (or Holden Bearings) 750 kg on a 40 Square Axle
  • SL (or Ford Bearings) 1500 kg on a 45 Round Axle

Axles are usually one piece solid steel, or can be made from stub axles welded in pipe, or welded on top of a solid bar (called an overlay axle), or using a drop arm (called a drop axle). This axle can raise or lower the trailer as required.

Rubber suspension axles are also available in different capacities and sizes, as well as half axles.

Types of Standard Axles

Capacity ratings are calculated with 14 inch wheels.
When using bigger wheels eg 16 inch axle rating is reduced by 25 %

  • 39 mm Round axle with LM bearings = 750 kg rating
  • 40 mm Square axle with LM bearings = 1000 kg rating
  • 45 mm Round axle with SL bearings = 1500 kg rating
  • 45 mm Square axle with SL bearings = 1500 kg rating
  • 50 mm Round axle with SL bearings = 1500 kg rating
  • 50 mm Square axle with SL bearings = 1500 kg rating

Axles with parallel bearings (same bearings inner & outer)
When using parallel axles order parallel hubs drums or discs

  • Capacity ratings are calculated with 16 inch wheels
  • 45 mm Round parallel axle = 1600 kg rating
  • 45mm Square parallel axle = 1600 kg rating
  • 50mm Round parallel axle = 1600 kg rating
  • 50mm Square parallel axle = 1600 kg rating

Capacity rating 2000 kg on 16 inch wheels

  • 50 mm Round axle = 2000 kg rating
  • 50 mm Square axle = 2000 kg rating
  • 60 mm Round axle = 2000 kg rating

Capacity  rating 3000 kg on 16 inch wheels

  • 60 mm Round axle = 3000 kg rating

Stub axles of the same specifications have the same capacities depending on construction.
